Chapter Summaries

Chapter 1

  • Introduced to Paddy and Daniel as well as details of their life backstories and how they became friends.
  • They, Paddy and Daniel, meet the Titanic’s designer, Thomas Andrews.
  • Daniel claims that, with time, he could find a way to make the magnificent “unsinkable” ship sinkable. Mr. Andrews said he would like to hear and see Daniel’s theory.

Chapter 2

  • Scene starts off with chaos and anger.
  • Mrs. Amelia Bronson, American suffragist, is blocking traffic while shouting “votes for women”. This of course angers people since they can’t get to the places they need to go.
  • Her daughter, Sophie, tries to get her to stop. She warns her mom that police are coming, but her mom doesn’t care. Mrs. Bronson thinks that getting arrested would help her cause.
  • The bobbies, or police, came and arrested Mrs. Bronson. She still was giving her spiel when being taken away. One of the women in the crowd took a constable’s helmet and started beating him with it, so he hit her with his truncheon causing her to bleed.
  • Sophie saw the lady bleeding and became angry. She attacked the constable and because of that she also went to jail.
  • In this chapter we learn two other things. One being that Sophie’s father gave her the role to keep her mom out of trouble. The other is that Sophie and her mother will be heading back to America on the Titanic.

Chapter 3

  • Titanic has 10 days before taking off. People were searching for last minute passages.
  • Introduction to Alfie Huggins and his purpose on the Titanic.
  • Learn briefly about his, Alfie’s, mother.
  • Clerk declined Alfie’s job application.
  • Alfie thinks up a plan to be able to have a job aboard the Titanic.

Chapter 4

  • Describes Paddy and Daniel’s place. It is an old printer shop but they call it “The Palace Gate”.
  • Daniel spent 5 days dreaming up a way for the Titanic to sink.
  • Paddy went off looking for food and saw a really nice drawing kit. He took one of the banknotes from their secret safe stash to buy the kit.
  • Daniel, through scraping his arm, found a way for the Titanic to sink.

Chapter 5

  • Paddy tried using the banknote but ended up getting caught. The money belonged to the Gilhooley brothers.
  • “James Gilhooley was the gangster who ran the waterfront district and half of Belfast beyond that.”
  • Kevin Gilhooley was ready to beat Paddy up, but Paddy escaped.
  • Paddy tries to find Daniel to warn him. Daniel was on his way to show Mr. Andrews his drawings.
  • Gilhooley brothers catch Paddy and Daniel.

Chapter 6

  • Paddy managed to escape the Gilhooley brothers, Daniel did not.
  • Paddy hid in a bale of Irish sheets and blankets. He managed to grab one of Daniel’s drawings.
  • Paddy sees blood on the deck and assumes Daniel is dead.
  • Paddy couldn’t get out of the bale in time. Because of that, he was lifted aboard the Titanic.
  • Paddy was now a stowaway headed to America.

Chapter 7

  • Introduced to Juliana Glamm.
  • She was in a Sopwith aeroplane with her father. She didn’t trust the structure of the plane.
  • Mentions that her father is the seventeenth Earl of Glamford.
  • Her father flies the plane a bit recklessly near the Titanic, nothing bad happens.

Chapter 8

  • Paddy finds certain gym equipment to be absurd.
  • Paddy is still mourning Daniel. He’s regretting pick pocketing the Gilhooley’s and spending the banknote.
  • Detailed description of the magnificence of the Titanic.
  • Paddy continues to explore the ship, finds room full of crew uniforms. Wears one to “fit in” and not get caught.
  • Alfie meets his father. His father is super happy to see him. Alfie reveals that he lied about his age to become a crew member.
  • Alfie noticed Paddy, but Paddy ran off scared.
  • Alfie’s worried that Paddy heard his confession to his father.

Chapter 9

  • 2,000+ passengers were on the dock waiting to be boarded.
  • Mentions that there was a jeweled copy of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam bound for an American museum.
  • Juliana and her father got their own lavish rooms. She went out on the deck to watch her mother say goodbye. She then noticed Sophie and her mother.
  • Sophie was humiliated by their entrance going aboard the Titanic. She tried getting her mom to forget about the cause during the voyage, but her mom dismissed her.
  • On deck, Sophie noticed Juliana. She, Sophie, shyly waved and Juliana stiffened her back. Sophie blames her mom.

Chapter 10

  • Paddy noticed the people that were rich, had a hard time controlling himself. He wanted to pickpocket each one.
  • Paddy hasn’t talked to Mr. Andrews yet because then he’d be found out to be a stowaway.
  • The Titanic nearly hit the American liner New York.

Chapter 11

  • Juliana’s father was busy playing a card game, which she didn’t like because she was worried that his lack of card game skills would cost them their fortune.
  • Alfie escorted Juliana to the dining room because her father wouldn’t stop playing his game.
  • Juliana sat at the same table as Sophie. At first, she didn’t like it, but at the end of the chapter it seems that they got along well.

Chapter 12

  • Alfie goes to visit his father while grabbing a shawl out of the baggage compartment for a passenger.
  • As he was grabbing the shawl, he noticed that something moved in the automobile nearby.

Chapter 13

  • Paddy was in the automobile. Alfie caught him and was threatening to tell the captain that Paddy was a stowaway. Paddy then threatened to say Alfie lied on his application.
  • While they were looking for the shawl, they came across a scrapbook about the Whitechapel murders.
  • After looking more closely at the scrapbook and remembering past events, they both came to the conclusion that the murderer could be aboard the Titanic.

Chapter 14

  • Alfie agreed to bring Paddy food only if Paddy didn’t snitch on him.
  • Paddy resolved to pass the voyage in hiding.
  • Titanic stopped at Queenstown to pick up more passengers.
  • Paddy was going to go off the ship when he ran into Kevin Gilhooley and his henchman, Semus. Paddy ran away as fast as he could, the two men followed. Paddy hid in the Turkish Bath room. Thankfully the steward there had his back and told them that they were mistaken for thinking that Paddy ran in there.
  • By the time Paddy left the room, it was too late to get off the ship because it already left Queenstown’s dock.

Chapter 15

  • Introduction to the captain of the Titanic, E.J. Smith, and his second officer, Mr. Lightoller.
  • Kevin Gilhooey and Semus burst in the captain’s bridge accusing that there was a criminal aboard the ship. They then demanded that the captain gather his crew so that they could identify him. Smith remained calm and said that they were welcome to ask the New York police for help to find the criminal, otherwise while they’re on the ship they are to obey the captain’s orders. Of course this made them, Kevin and Semus, even more angry.

Chapter 16

  • Sophie was sitting out on the deck observing the sea and sky. Alfie got her a blanket and they talked for a bit, he was trying to comfort her since she said her mother was making the voyage miserable.
  • Juliana ran over to hide from Major Mountjoy. Alfie made a comment about how Mountjoy talks and goes on and on. Juliana was quick to show disapproval and correct Alfie, but Sophie quickly defended him.
  • Juliana then left to go find her father. Sophie said she was bored and had something to do. Alfie mentions that he found something that’ll turn her mind “upside down and inside out”. She agreed to meet him later that night.
  • Sophie was waiting for the day to go by because she was curious to see what Alfie was talking about. When it was time, she snuck out and nearly tripped on a man that was lying on the ground. After a few seconds she realized that it was Juliana’s father. Instead of calling the stewards or officers, she carried him to his room.
  • Both Juliana and her, Juliana’s, maid were shocked to see him and were grateful for Sophie bringing him to his room and not notifying anyone.
  • Juliana says she anytime Sophie will need a service, she’ll do it. Sophie decides to ask her to come with her to meet Alfie and his surprise.

Chapter 17

  • Alfie showed both Juliana and Sophie the scrapbook.
  • They talked about everything surrounding it until they heard someone coming. They hid.

Chapter 18

  • The person coming was Paddy. The three watched him to see what he was up to.
  • Paddy grabbed a suitcase and dragged it up the ladder. They- Alfie, Juliana, and Sophie- followed him all the way to the reception area for second class passengers. There they found him tossing out the suitcases contents.
  • Juliana asked what he was doing, Paddy told her to mind her own business. He then went on to explain a brief summary of his life. Alfie made the mistake of proving that he knew Paddy and knew that he was a stowaway.
  • Sophie felt compassion for Paddy, meanwhile Juliana had a stone face. She insisted on going back to her room. Sophie asked her not to tell, but Juliana ignored her.

Chapter 19

  • Paddy has a dream where he’s talking to Daniel. He suddenly gets waken up by an angry older sailor. To try to save his skin, Paddy offers to do the task that the sailor asking for.
  • Paddy looks for Alfie for his help. Alfie agrees to help him. As Paddy’s waiting, he runs into Mr. Lightoller, the strictest officer aboard the Titanic. Lightoller realizes something’s wrong and says to the other crew with him to alert the bridge.
  • Paddy ran away and ended up running into none other than Semus.

Chapter 20

  • Semus grabbed onto Paddy and didn’t let go so Paddy bit him causing him to let go. Paddy ran away as fast as he could go. Both Kevin and Semus chased him.
  • As they chased him, people were pushed and things were getting tipped over. It was all just a big mess.
  • Paddy found his way into the barbers shop. He put shaving cream on his face and a towel around him. The barber looked confused but saw the look in Paddy’s eyes and understood.
  • Kevin and Semus walked in and asked the barber if he’s seen Paddy, he says no. They, Kevin and Semus, are about to leave until Semus points out the reflection of Paddy in the mirror.
  • Paddy tries to dive past them, but it doesn’t work. He got caught and couldn’t move.

Chapter 21

  • Alfie got what the old sailor requested and was looking for Paddy so he could give it to him. It was a book, specifically the cargo manifest.
  • While he was looking, Sophie called out to him. Major Mountjoy was sitting next to her talking away, so she lied and thanked Alfie for bringing her library book. Mountjoy looked at it and was bewildered because he read a section about Norwegian sardines. After that, he left Sophie alone.
  • Alfie explained everything to Sophie and she was willing to help look for Paddy. While looking, Juliana spotted them and called them over. Once Sophie mentioned what they were doing, Juliana had a cold expression. Sophie tried to reason with her, but once she figured she was getting no where, she ran off continuing to look for Paddy.
  • Semus held a tight, strong grip on Paddy and covered his mouth. Paddy couldn’t move or try to escape. Kevin was explaining how Paddy would die and not be able to see the rest of the wonderful world.
  • Once Semus was about to throw Paddy overboard, Paddy yelled for help. Semus tried to muzzle him, but Paddy bit down on his fingers. Paddy was struck in the face multiple times, but he still tried calling for help. He grabbed onto the rail bars and never let go.
  • Paddy was starting to wonder how much longer he could hold on.

Chapter 22

  • Alfie came to the rescue and hit Semus with the cargo manifest. He then called for help. Crew members immediately came and “arrested” Kevin and Semus and took them to the brig.
  • Some sailors asked how Paddy was doing, but like usual, Paddy ran away fearing they’d find out that he was a stowaway.
  • He ran and hid in a lifeboat in front of Juliana. They made eye contact before he completely hid.
  • Mr. Lightoller came by. Some of the crew members informed him of what just happened. Mr. Lightoller knew that the boy they were speaking of was Paddy. He asked Juliana if she saw him run off.
  • Instead of turning Paddy in, she protected him by giving Mr. Lightoller the wrong directions. Paddy was shocked, but grateful.
  • Juliana said she’d let him know when it was safe to come out. Paddy stayed in that lifeboat for a good long while.

Chapter 23

  • Kevin and Semus were thrown in separate jail cells. Semus was taking care of his bloody nose while Kevin was raging at Thomas King, the Master-of-Arms.

Chapter 24

  • Representative of the Marconi company came to James Gilhooley, in Belfast, delivering a message from Kevin.
  • Daniel, it turns out, wasn’t dead but instead was taken captive by the Gilhooley’s. He’s been forced to work for them ever since they beat him up.
  • He smiled after hearing what Paddy did and because he knew Paddy was alive and headed towards a better life.
